Missed Opportunity

The Hand

What’s the key inflection point for this runout, and what could Hero have done differently?

Flop maybe cbet but with the gutshot + ace high + flush draw idk if thats good to bluffing maybe we just have too equity. River idk if i love the lead, i think he would dont check a lot in this river. Youre way stronger than me but thats my opinion

That’s about the worst possible flop for the PFR, so it’s best to just simplify to range check on that board.

I don’t think you’re getting anyone off a chop on the river unless you go huge, which seems like a mistake because they can still have 78 and boats. The small size might get called by most pairs though - but they’re never betting themselves - so I think that’s the best play. All the 2 pair hands are counterfeit, so there aren’t many worse hands that will call a large bet, likely only A4, and there aren’t many combos of that left.

In a vacuum I think I played this fine.

Player specific, I put LZ on a straight when he leads the turn, and I think as played I have more boats on the river than he does.

So feeling pretty confident that we’re chopping, I would have liked to find a huge bet on the river here

Missed Opportunity?
Did I mess this up? or was it reasonable

ring 8h cwptg
me - 505bb
v - 252bb

In MP with a very splashy player behind I get
QJoring
and decide to open limp with the intention of calling the splashy players wild raise. Splashy player folds and BB raises to 3bb, I call, HU.
Flop

Turn

BB-check
Me-bet 4bb, BB-call
River

BB-check
Me-bet 9.9bb
BB-reraise to 80bb
I run my time down and eventually just call.
v shows KJo

probably should have bet more before the river but surely they would have called to the end regardless

This has to be a pretty big mistake, right?

There is only 1 combo of QQ possible, leaving plenty more KJ/AJ combos even with only 1 jack unaccounted for. Gotta figure Hero is good here the vast majority of the time.

This is without even considering the note that Villain is a known fish and didn’t 3bet big enough pre, but honestly I’m not even sure it matters here. I think we 3bet river against anything but an ubernit.

I think it was a pretty big mistake. I couldn’t really see them having QQ after checking the turn in any scenario. After the 8x rr on the river I convinced myself that it was 10s or a bluff and a bluff wouldn’t call. I had incorrectly completely ruled out a J in the moment, they could have even had AK I think too, idk big blunder that I wanted to relive here for punishment ig. :sob:

I’ve been on a steady diet of Hungry Horse this year and one thing Marc really emphasizes are these spots where Villain is inelastic, we have to remember how many more such situations there are for them than for us (we know better than to overplay non-nutted hands, but they don’t)

So if I read this right your JJJQQ boat beats V’s JJJTT boat.

Yes, you missed out raising. Always raise river with nuts, just a question of sizing. In this particular pot, it looks like a shove. If he folds, you win same as if you call. If he calls you win more. No benefit to flat-calling that. You missed out there.

It’s not the nuts tho—it’s not even the second nuts!
