VP Pappy’s Holier Than Thou
The Nine Deadly Sins of Poker
1. Lust: The unreasonable desire for the pleasures of how it feels to win.
2. Gluttony: The unreasonable desire to win every hand.
3. Greed/Avarice: The unreasonable desire to win more than is needed.
4. Sloth: The unreasonable desire to slow-play every good hand.
5. Anger/Wrath: The unreasonable desire to get even after a bad beat.
6. Envy: The unreasonable desire for another player’s chips, or skills.
7. Arrogance/Ego: The unreasonable, over exaggerated opinion of one’s
intelligence and skills.
8. Pride/Vanity: The unreasonable desire for respect for one’s own skills.
9. Thirst: The unreasonable desire to consume large quantities of alcohol.
I had fun writing about the same theme of the seven deadly sins to see what it inspired in me before reading what you had written.
Wrath : Playing impulsively after a big loss. Tilt is the executioner of your bankroll. Breathe, take a step back… or sacrifice your stack.
Greed : Being afraid to bet or raise to protect your stack. Poker rewards courage, not cowardice.
Lust : Being obsessed with very good hands like AK or QQ and forgetting the fundamentals: position and ranges matter more than the beauty of your cards.
Envy : Trying to mimic the player who won a big pot and adopting their strategy. Stay true to your own style and adapt intelligently.
Sloth : Failing to take the time to study your games, analyze your mistakes, or read about the game. Poker is an art that demands work and discipline.
Gluttony : Chasing impossible draws and wasting your chips hoping for a miracle. Know when to let go.
Pride : Thinking you’re unbeatable or underestimating your opponents. Poker has a knack for punishing oversized egos.
