Is the Min-Raise Actually Good?

I see players using min-raises in all kinds of spots — preflop, on the flop, even on the river. Sometimes it looks weak, sometimes it looks genius.

What do you think?

  • When does a min-raise actually make sense?
  • Do you use it often, or avoid it?
  • Any examples where it worked (or backfired)?

Curious how others see it — is it a smart play or just lazy clicking?

When facing a 1BB min-raise, I typically view it like a check. If I would have checked, I’ll call; if I would have bet, I’ll raise. There are rare instances where this is the appropriate bet size, like a J22 board and the pot is just 4-5BB.

Min-raises to a different size are a different story. Usually it’s a chance to play perfectly with a polarized range - fold off my bluffs and call with my strong value.

a min. bet or raise can be used 2 control the size of a pot—done it many times.
