I like to listen to music when I play. The worse I play, the louder music…and beer. Beer helps. shrug-smiley
What’s most important is that you can’t will the cards to flop in you’re favor. You must learn to wait, no matter how long or what you have to do until your luck changes.
A little ranting isn’t necessarily a sign of weakness either.

This thread makes me think of something I saw on ESPN’s WSOP coverage. Can’t remember the year - but a guy set up a small booth in the lobby, with a sign saying “I’ll listen to your bad beat story for $5.” The guy would offer a little sympathy and a head shake. Maybe Replay should have something like that - a staff member with a chat window who will listen to players rant about lucky donks.

Naw, there would be too many - that could crash the site completely.

Running bad in poker is like driving on an icy road - the more you try to compensate, the worse it gets. Bad, weird, improbable beats are part of poker - and I’ve played online and live poker for 20 years, I’ve seen it all. Just stay the course, listen to some music (it increases dopamine levels) and yeah, drink some beer or whiskey or wine or gin - or indulge in a little something-something. Though it can be tough, try not to take it personally - realize that a lot of players here have never played poker before and are just running wild, splashing chips around.

Good luck out there.

I used to let it bother me…a lot. Then I would have a great day, and I would say to myself, why can’t you do that all the time. That’s when I remind myself, that more often than not, in a game of free poker, you do need good cards to win. There will always be someone who’s willing to go all in with 2 3 off suit, and they will catch a straight, flush, or full house. When your bet has no money value, you have nothing to lose. Now, for all you bully’s out there, yes, you might be able to make 90% of the people, (me included) to fold, but there will always be the one who won’t. I just make sure I’m listening to great music, and then it’s never a waste of time.

I recently lost $300 million over three hands relatively close to each other, all with monster hands that got crushed by the absolute nuts. Sometimes I can just take that in stride, but this time the third left me feeling like it was time for a break, and when I came back I decided it might be a good idea to just drop one level down from my usual stakes for a wee bit. I also tightened my range a bit, though not really anything dramatic, as I find it is often with your best hands that you are most likely to lose giant pots like that.

One other thing I often like to do, especially if the bad day stretches into a bad week or a bad month, is to kind of reconstruct my play a bit. It might be that stronger players are adapting to my frequencies and tendencies, and so I try to become a different sort of player. I still want the new style to be fundamentally sound, but there are really a lot of different approaches you can take to the game, and trying out some new stuff is a good way to expand your skills, anyway.

I stop playing. If I’m reliving a bad beat over and over, it’s no fun and I will play badly, so I just don’t play until my brain is thinking more about how poker is fun than about the bad beat/mistake.
