Or at the very least feel a sense of competency. I’ve been playing for around a year now and I still don’t feel like I’d be good enough for live poker.
I’m terrible. Hopeless. The worst. Just ask @bill8888.
Then you shouldn’t because they will sense it.
oh how discouraging
LMFAO!!! Way to go “silent Bill”, (don’t know if you are aware but he’s called silent bill 'cus RP muted him at the tables for life!) crushing a young woman’s dreams!
Hi there. If you are seeking competency, it is a long and hard journey. I only played poker for about a year and a half. I have been seeking skills and techniques that are required to be a good player. However, you will hit wall at some stage because other good players might have something that is upper hand than what you have. You must study what helps you at all time. On top of that, you need to practice on hand and seek your own style and skills. I believe all the pro players and top players of the world, they never stop analyzing and study their hands so that it becomes somewhat their second nature. There is no such thing as good player and bad player as long as you know what you are doing. It all comes down to two cards you are holding. Find out what are you going to do with it is the key.
there’s no shortcuts… if u wanna learn to play live poker u gotta play live poker. this place is a first step, next step might be playing some pub poker or find a poker meetup, then on to some low stakes casino/poker rooms. take your time unless u got money to burn.
Do you understand the basic concepts, such as implied odds, equity, and expected value? If not, educate yourself. Daniel Negreanu has several helpful tutorials and videos where he comments in real time on tournaments he’s playing. I like them not bc I want to model my game on his, but bc he is personable and can speak in layman’s terms. Plus, he’s Canadian.
ps, should have mentioned position and hand selection among the basic concepts.
Six years of replay, 1/3 of a million hands.
Still learning, when someone says they have seen it all. It’s laughable.
You guys have proved that replay is stomping grounds for real life players whose 50 years in casinos, in some cases, cannot keep up with even the modest player on this site…
Players online are chizzled for fast effective domination!!!
Unfortunately due to a mix of lack of funds and location I can’t really go to a Poker club or casino. Might be a year or so until I’m able to do so. I’ve heard there are live Poker sites that allow you to play really low stakes, like I’m talking cents. Have you heard of this? And do you think the players there would be bingo types or play seriously.
It definitely wasn’t overnight. I started out just playing for fun with friends, and I made a ton of mistakes in the beginning. Over time, I started picking up on patterns, learning from better players, and reading up on strategy. I’d say it took a few years before I really felt confident at the table. But even now, I wouldn’t say I’ve mastered it. I still get humbled at times, which just keeps me motivated to keep learning.
When you do feel comfortable playing live, try the low buy-in tournaments first. You should be able to find them in the $30 +/- range. But make sure you don’t act like a newbie as you’ve mentioned above because many players would just love to see you at their table.
I definitely wouldn’t recommend playing $30 tourneys and then play $100 tourneys and back and forth etc., because that’s when you’ll lose a lot of your money.
Same here! I’ve been playing online and still have no clue what I’m doing. Half the time I feel like I’m just donating chips to the more confident players. If there’s a secret to being good, someone please send it to me
preferably in a step-by-step PowerPoint.
see if there is a pub poker league in your area. it is still free poker so of course there will be lots of donkeys, but at least it is face to face.
You don’t recommend ring games?
still trying my best!!! but hopefully i will get better!
Cash games are fine. But you had posted you weren’t currently comfortable playing at a casino. The recommended buy-in used to be 100x - 200x the BB in cash games. Unsure if that’s still true. If we were ever to play at the same table, I’d recommend you start with at least 500x just to be safe.
It took me two years of grinding until live poker ‘clicked.’ Study hands, play low stakes, and trust the process you’ll get there. Free-play services like as this site provide for risk-free practice.
Been playing poker since i was 13, still not good at it–i do enjoy it though.
