Hubby and I rigged up an outdoor fiberglass storm curtain to attach over a sliding glass door in preparation for storms that bring hurricane force winds and rain to our coastal home. The rain comes at that door like a firehose, and we’re always afraid the water will push across the track, get inside, and flood (ruin) our hardwood floors. It’s happened before and required a panicked and rapid response. Fortunately we weren’t sleeping or away when those rains poured down.
This got me wondering: Who else here is a do-it-yourself type? If you fixed something you’re proud of, tell us about it. Maybe you can teach some old dogs new tricks.
@JanCee I have a new do it yourself-er project going on. New deck coming off a master bedroom on a Bi-level house top floor. I’ll post pictures when I’m done next week.

I discovered YouTube is a great source for home repairs. Fixed my dishwasher, refrigerator, and power washer. Saved hundreds dollars. Love that YouTube.
I used to be more of a diyer when younger - refinished furniture, layed flooring, remodeled the bathroom (with help), made drapes, made a pattern for a crocheted tablecloth that had around 8,000 stitches and took my mother 2-3 years to finish using fine gauge cotton.
These days I just make small repairs where possible. For example, as in the pictures below I fashioned a dishwasher rack clip out of a large paper clip and it works very well. Also, fashioned a fix for the toilet fill valve - something was missing and the sleeve was submerged so I cut a piece of cork and sliced into it half way, applied it to the centre post and that kept the sleeve above the water and stopped the water from filling continually. Made a new shade for a floor lamp from ikea. Used a roll of shoji gami paper to make the new shade. Dropped my phone and shattered a bit of the corner of the screen protector - applied New Skin to the corner to contain the wee bits of glass and it’s held ever since. Didn’t want to use glue for obvious reasons. I know I could have ordered new parts for all of these, but much less waste this way and it’s fun to improvise. The first picture is a combination of my interest in bottles and chess. I combined them to make the bottles to represent the king, queen and bishop:)

One of the things what I (must) do myself. It is now 38 years old, and no one want to repair such old things. Not easy to get parts for it. In Germany is a very very friendly helping forum of owners of such bikes. Meetings too. It can break foot or leg on starting engine. And I had it at 80 mph offroad.
but I do believe in prefabricated homes now delivered to site is the way to go. Cost wise and time wise.
