What is the point of a RAKE in free poker......?

I have played poker of every form. Live, online. And one thing I can never wrap my head around is free online poker platforms that profit from selling their chips, is taking a rake. I jumped stakes to the 1000-2000 Hi Lo Plo NL. And the rake seems to be uncapped. We played 2/3 handed for a little bit and I was amazed at how high the rake is. What is the point of a rake? I would understand if it was real money or there were more perks. But you can just sell as many chips as you want. Could someone please tell me the information one would need to know for why there is a rake on here and why is it so high?

I’m assuming it’s mostly to keep inflation in check. Replay gives away a lot of free chips too, so if they didn’t take a rake, chips will depreciate in value, including chips people have paid for.
Unless they stop giving away free chips altogether, you’re paying the rake one way or another.
I suspect they actually pay out more chips than they collect, but it’s hard to say for sure.

Hi all,

We’re making some increases to our rake on Thursday. The last time we made changes was in May 2022, and after evaluating our chip economy, we see another need to make adjustments.

We’re making these changes for a number of reasons:

  • We’re keeping our economy in mind. We want your chips to feel valuable, and avoid the stark levels of inflation that other poker sites see.
  • This will allow us to continue to offer promotions that pay out higher rates of chips. We increased prizes significantly this year, and we want to continue to make them exciting.

We’re making some changes to the BB cap at some stake levels, and our high stakes tables will rake at 5% (our other tables have already been raking at that rate). With these changes, we’ll still be charging less rake than most free-to-play sites (many of which have no rake cap) and it keeps us in line with rake charged by some real money sites.

This chart details the changes that you can expect:

We encourage you to check out our blog post on bankroll management and keep this in mind when you choose your game tables. This will minimize the effect any rake changes have on the variance you experience.

Got to have a rake for many reasons-makes it look and feel more real and 2 get ppl. to buy chips as 2 many would be in play etc… Try taking a bingo players chip lol, i took a few and lost chips because of the rake and being hardheaded ( 32 hands will cost you lol ).
