What do people really think about pre-flop betting?

I am wondering what people think about betting pre- flop? I am new to Replay Poker and follow a tight strict strategy concerning pre-bet raising which till now has got me very far. I am also interested in what others think about it when people bet big or limp in before the flop?

The hand changes with each street but by far the biggest change is pre-flop to flop.

Pre-flop, all that I’m really doing is using the information of 1 ~ my pocket, 2 ~ my position, 3 ~ the action before me, 4 ~ the blinds and stacks, 5 ~ opponent tendencies, and deciding if I want to see this flop and if so at what price. ICM and bubble aside, the price is determined by how much I think it will take to make EVERYBODY else fold except for 1 or 2 Villains. Of course once in a while I might just try to steal. That’s it.

Bluffing, slow playing and ‘getting the money in’ is strictly post-flop stuff.

This worked very well while I was implementing it. I abandoned the project due to a mix of boredom/lack of interest, but it really was quite profitable

Generally, but not always, you want to be pre-flop raising if you want to play the hand.
A large % of the hands are of the fold variety. When your garbage hits on the flop, you gotta shake it off and realize you were probably playing it right by folding. Limping pre-flop gives you little/no information…on the button, if they’re letting you get away with limping, occasionally you might hit big, else it’s an easy post flop fold.
Of course it’s really much more complex than what I said above, once you’ve played at least a couple hundred thousand hands, you start to get a grip on it. Good luck to you.

Raising pre = winning. Just not every hand. Fold or raise, and fold a ton, especially early position.

So you’re telling me that I have to fold half my hands??!!??

Hell yes, 2.3rd, 3/4s, more, depending on the type of game, the stakes, the opponents.

But I’ll lose if I fold pre!!

Lose what? Your ante? Pfft.

But I have 85s, I could hit!!! I could flush this!!!

About 30% chance to hit an 8 or a 5 or both or trips, yes. The same chance if you had QJs or AKo. And being suited makes your hand about 3% better (which is nice but not amazing). Your chances of straighting a 2-gapper are pretty meh too. You might as well have something better to see a flop with.

So you limp with 85di. What do you do when …
1 ~ you whiff the flop (which will happen 70% of the time) and Villain bets?
2 ~ you hit low pair with an all spade flop?
3 ~ you hit a flop of 8A3? (that A really sucks for you)

If you don’t flop 88, 55, 85 or 2 di, you are basically check folding. You may as well have done that pre.

Stop trying to get a cheap flop with junk. This is poor man’s poker. Especially in tournaments when the blinds go up and up and up. Learn to fold. Play only good hands, and when you do, raise them pre-flop, 3x, 4x, 5x.
