GG poker have hosted events in Mexico. They were played online, but everyone was onsite, in person. No idea if this is part of that, but it seems likely.
Also, although VPN’s are against ToS, there’s no way to definitively tell if someone is playing through a VPN or not.
There’s a player on Replay who has a different country flag on their profile every time I look them up. I don’t think that means they’re trying to cheat though. If you got suckered in by one of the numerous adds for VPN’s you probably just always connect through it, without even thinking about it.
Is VPN illegal on Replay?I understand it is not legal for cash sites, since those site are only legally allowed to operate in certain states where online poker is not illegial and using VPN can bypass that and the site could be criminally liable. But for a play chip site I dont see how it would be a problem.
I think the main thing the restriction on VPN usage is trying to prevent is the same person playing on multiple accounts at the same time - or more likely someone flooding a site with a bunch of coordinated bots. That is likely only a real issue for cash sites too, but there are ways a VPN can help mask cheating, even here.
I could be wrong, but I get the impression no site really cares much about VPN use unless they suspect cheating, and then they’ll use that to ban people and confiscate funds because it’s much easier to prove.
The thing is, there are a lot of professional players doing that, Adrian Mateos for example, he just has the Mexican flag all the time, and on GGPoker is the representation of the country where the registration was made, it is not possible to change that. He lives in England and play live almost all the year traveling around the world, he never visits Mexico. The online tournaments that he plays, for sure, are played from other country. And he is not the only one.
