The Areni-1 shoe is a 5,500-year-old leather shoe that was found in 2008 in excellent condition in the Areni-1 cave located in the Vayots Dzor province of Armenia. [1] It is a one-piece leather-hide shoe, the oldest piece of leather footwear in the world known to contemporary researchers.
The shoe was made from a single piece of tanned leather, stitched at the front and back, and tied with leather cords. It corresponds to a modern U.S. size 7, and archaeologists believe it could have been worn by either a man or a woman2.
Only one shoe was discovered at the Areni-1 site.
Grandma always called me her little “darling” and I would tell her: “one day Gram I will be on top.”
