Yeah, he wasn’t know as, “The King of Overly Dramatic Readings of Song Lyrics” for nothing.

Who hasn’t rocked out to Patrick Swayze’s mesmerizing rendition of “Love Hurts?”

But did you know it was originally done by a totally unknown duo called “The Everly Brothers?”

Gary Jules’ version is likely the Mad World a lot of people are familiar with these days, but here’s the original by Tears for Fears …

Everybody knows this one from The Righteous Brothers in 1965
THE RIGHTEOUS BROTHERS - EBB TIDE 1965 - YouTube

Very few will recognize this version from Vic Damone in 1953

The originally recorded version by the Frank Chackfield Orchestra in 1953 had no words.

Here’s a nice one I know you’ve heard from Roberta Flack (pay attention to the lyrics):

I’m pretty sure this was the original from Peter Yarrow, Paul Stooky, and Mary Travers (notice how the lyrics were Bowlderized in the 1950s):

There are too many songs to mention that were originally hits for black artists. These were known as ‘race’ records. Many white artists then recorded inferior versions of the same songs and made much more money than the black artists.

This is perhaps the most famous one of them all:

Here’s the version of Dream a Little Dream of Me that everybody knows
The Mamas & The Papas - Dream A Little Dream of Me - YouTube Mamas & Papas, the iconic version in 1968

But, it was previously covered by dozens of artists and groups, for example
Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong: Dream A Little Dream Of Me - YouTube Louis Armstrong & Ella Fitzgerald (~1958)

Here’s the original by the orchestra of Ricky Nelson’s dad, Ozzie

Just in time for Valentine’s Day, this is for all my favorite Replay ladies (yes, all 242 of you, LOL)

Julio Iglesias - To All The Girls I've Loved Before - YouTube Willie Nelson & Julio Iglesias, CMA 1984 The version you all know.

Here’s the original, sung by the music’s composer, Albert Hammond OBE, in 1975. I think Willie improved it.
