Overzealous Forum Moderation

I will say this as civilly as I can as to not get zucc’d

I’m aware that I am not alone in finding the forum moderation sometimes overzealous  While I genuinely appreciate all the thankless effort that the mods put into maintaining this forum, I feel some restraint is occasionally called for…

Topics will sometimes be merged unnecessarily. Not everything that seems roughly “similar topic” should be merged, IMO. If someone starts a new thread in 2024 about things that happened in 2024, who benefits from merging that thread with a dead conversation from 2019? My take is that the answer is “no one.”

Ownership of a thread is a real thing that contributes to the flow of conversation and ease of forum navigation. If I start my own thread to discuss things that interest ME and MY FRIENDS and MY circumstances NOW, there’s value in that thread being its own thing. Merging the thread with someone ELSE’S discussion from [x years ago] only creates more confusion; now I have to slog through tons of no-longer-relevant-or-active posts, often by users who aren’t even on the site anymore, to get back to my discussion.

Hi Younguru,
Perhaps you would let me know which topic you are referring to? It is always helpful to get useful imput?
Thank you for your cooperation.

Thanks for the reply @grapevine! It actually wasn’t even my thread this time

Specifically recently, I’m referring to threads people start about a series of hands they played in a given instance. like @brojustfold’s thread about his recent bad beats, or @napkin_holder’s tournament review thread a couple weeks ago. Both were merged into zombie threads; in both cases, I think it would have been better to leave them as distinct topics.

Hi Younguru,
As you will see, I have just explained to brojustfold that I cannot see any quoted hands. I would refer you to the Code of Conduct in the forum which asks players not to cross post or start new topics when a little searching can find queries from other players and may be relevant. You do not have to “scroll down” through loads of posts, you can simply go to the latest one.
It is easy just to start a new topic, when a continuation of another topic may be of interest not just to your friends, but to the whole of the forum members.
Best of luck at the tables.

Hmm, weird; maybe his post somehow got reformatted! Yesterday I was able to see all the hands and comment on those I found interesting.

I agree with you broadly about continuing existing topics, but I think we differ on where to draw that line  For me, “Tournament Victories and Bad Beat Defeats” basically describes most of what one could conceivably wish to discuss about playing a tournament. Should all such discussions be part of one massive Pangea thread? Surely there’s utility for both reader and poster in having more subdivisions therein.

To be honest most of the time when I find myself furrowing my brow at a merged post, “Tournament Victories…” is the destination. It’s just such a big bucket, yknow?

With all due respect that is exactly why we have Moderators. Have fun & gl at the tables my friend.
