I went from 0 chips to 1 billion in 6 months. Just wanted to say thanks!

Hello everyone,

I am swmore, you might have seen me at the tables. I am a former professional player from Australia. In my country, online poker is totally illegal, which makes it almost impossible to play for real money. However, having played for so long, and loving the game so much, I had the itch to get some hands in and challenge myself. As a result, I found Replay poker.

In 6 months I was able to run my 2,500 free chips into 1 billion, which you can see from my profile. Unfortunately for Replay, I never spent money on chips - sorry!

It’s been an unreal grind, with periods of almost unimaginable bad luck, but I finally made it. I wanted to say thank you to everyone I have played with. Sorry if I yelled at you whilst I was mad, or annoyed you by timing out. Replay has a fantastic group of players and the community here is really great.

I am a full time Dad and business owner, so it’s hard to justify continuing to play much more past this point. I’d love to take a shot at the number one spot, but that would probably take years, and I doubt my wife would approve! So, it’s farewell for now.

If you have any questions about strategy or tactics, or anything you might be struggling with, I’d be happy to answer. Otherwise, stay safe and thanks for the games. I wish you all the best of luck at the tables.

Hi mate and welcome to the forums

We actually played a fair bit together months ago and I have a note on you at 60M and 135M chip count, so I can attest to the fact you probably never bought chips and never needed to!

I’m surprised you didn’t start playing earlier, when covid pushed an influx of players to the site.

You were grinding hella hard at times! Many times I came online you were playing, same time zone so not super surprising.

I actually have many friends that are good players that have built massive bankrolls very quickly in a short time playing high stakes on RP.

HOW TO WIN ON RP

It surprises me how much average players complain on RP and struggle to win!

I think its worth noting the basics of your journey. You only played ring, mostly 6MAX as far as I noticed. You played multiple tables 4 or more at MED and 2 or more at HIGH stakes. You played a hell of a lot. You played a fairly basic, winning strategy.

Its a pretty simple strategy to win a LOT on RP.

Former professional poker player, MTT or cash?

I think what players struggle with the most is psychological. Many good players are a testament to the fact RP is easy to beat for a lot of chips with a decent & intelligent strategy.

I’d love to see some hands of unimaginable bad luck!

I never noticed you chatting at my tables, although I also frequently dont chat either. I guess fortunately or unfortunately we never really butted heads, yelled at each other or got too mad?!?!?! lol

I joined RP back in 2015 and played for a few years and then quit for several years. I have a RP friend who basically started at the same time and managed to make it into the top 10 playing against the best players on the site. He basically stopped playing mostly, and now occasionally plays.

Thoughts and feelings on the journey in general? Back in 2015 I meet many players and made friends and we Skyed a lot. Did you make a conscious decision to not chat much and make friends on the site? At what point was 1B the goal?

Its definitely more distracting chatting and making friends if winning the MAX is the objective.

Good luck off the tables!

Hi Dogs,

Thanks very much for your post. I do remember playing with you on the way up, and I have a couple of notes on you. I remember you were more aggressive than most which makes you harder to play against.

As I mentioned I used to play online professionally (cash) way back in the day. I had grand aspirations of being the next Tom Dwan, who was absolutely my hero. I can say with confidence that I’ve never had as much passion for any other endeavour as I used to have for poker. It was my whole life.

However, I was held back by poor work ethic and poor emotional control in various ways. It was a crushing disappointment to me to finally admit that my dreams weren’t going to come to fruition. I’ve found great happiness in business ownership but my failure to “make it” in poker really bothered me quite deeply for some time.

After finding Replay and messing around a bit I really found that all that poker knowledge was still in my brain (I’ve played more than 4 million hands lifetime). I wanted to set myself a challenge to finally put my disappointment to rest. Even though it’s just play money, nonetheless the discipline to grind it out day after day, and suffer the bad beats and try and maintain emotional composure is very much real.

The challenge brought me right back to my younger self and I could immediately relate to how I used to feel back then. It was marvellous to finally, as a much older man, train myself to conquer those emotional weaknesses and even improve my game a little too, whilst grinding the hours day in and day out. I feel that I can finally put those past disappointments behind me.

I didn’t chat much because I usually played 6 tables, 4 at a minimum right up until the very end when I was playing just one or two of the very highest limit tables with all the big boys. 1B became the goal when I realised that to do so, I’d have to tangle with the best players on the site. I knew I wanted to test my ability to accumulate chips, but also to play and compete with the established leaders, which I have done quite well, and honestly I’d like to do more.

Its a pretty simple strategy to win a LOT on RP.

Yes, admittedly the player base on Replay isn’t super challenging which is to be expected from a play money site. Even at the very highest levels I rarely got put in spots where I didn’t have a good idea how to proceed. However, on rare occasions I did run into some amazingly good plays from some players, mostly at the elite stakes tables. I wish that Replay made it easier to search your past hands, because I can remember my hole cards and other details but didn’t save the hand history so I have no idea how to dig them up.

For players who want to grind it out and accumulate chips, rising up the stakes to the very top is certainly achievable - just takes a lot of time, effort and consistency.

You played a fairly basic, winning strategy.

This is true, particularly preflop, though postflop I do like to get creative. If I had to state for newer players what the biggest mistake I noted was, it’s playing too many hands, and putting too much money in the pot with garbage. Makes it very easy to win money from those players.

Any comment on your best hand during your run?

1B in 6 months is an amazing accomplishment.

Congratulations on reaching your goal.

Thank you Excaliburns, I appreciate it.

Probably my most memorable hand was where I lost a full stack with quads, because my opponent had a straight flush. I was kinda just sitting there stunned, lol

Congratulations on reaching 1 billion chips. Since you’re taking a break, how about posting a screen image (a snippet copy) of your Statistics page?

Your Statistics can be found in the Drop-Down menu in the upper right of most screens.

I like to analyze Statistics.

Thanks

Thank you Smooth, sure thing. Here is a screenshot:

For those who are familiar with poker stats, in this grind and at lower stakes I played around 21% of hands which is fairly standard. I expect my preflop stats were around 21 vpip and 18 pfr which is very normal for a solid lower stakes grinder with some creativity.

As I moved up and played more shorthanded against better players I expect I was a little looser and more aggressive preflop.

When I was a professional playing in tough 6-max games these stats would raise to about 25% vpip and 22% PFR with a high 3bet percentage, around 10 or 11%.

@swmore , Congratulations and Fantastic success, reaching 1Billion in 6 months. Was wondering if you would consider telling your story with Replays, Blog if there is a demand ? I think it would encourage other players to set more aggressive goals for successful bankroll increases. @JenGen7 Thoughts?

Hi Litenin,

Sure thing, I’d be happy to. I know that many people find poker very frustrating and it can be a big hit to your confidence if you’re not winning and you don’t know why. If it would be valuable for others, I’d be happy to share.

Are there any other documented winnings of 1B, in less than a year, on this site without buying chips?

Is six months the record?

Anyone know?

Your without showdown numbers are off the charts, very nice, I play a lot of Private leagues here so I haven’t accumulated a lot of chips in my first year here, our numbers are similar except for the at showdown and without showdown yours are the opposite of mine, you were aggressive with your bets, looks like a lot of pressure was put on your opponents.
Here are my stats
feel free to analyze and give me some advice

@Excaliburns

There was another individual who did something similar, who also did 1 billion within one month as I recall.

The thread title was also similar to this one. I think it was posted in 2022.

Found it. I noticed he did it in 12,038 hands.

Thanks @smooth99 , I do remember now after reading that post and very similar to this post huh?? GL to anyone that can progress their bankroll in 6 months or even 10 days as @chezecow did.

That’s very impressive, though I would have been surprised had I been the fastest. Part of my challenge was to observe strict bankroll management to limit risk, which is what I would have done playing for real money. I wanted to make sure that I never had to reload to imitate real world conditions.

That being said, the other dude achieved the same mark in 1/10th of the hands, which is quite something.

You get an achievement for that bad beat! I really think RP should have a Bad Beat Jackpot to make it more meaningful and rewarding!

I have a friend, @Iuffy that wants it. I have never received it, either. Its a memorable accomplishment none the less, so congrats I guess!

Its pretty much impossible to say if a player did buy or not. I watched @swmore for a few months and even if he did buy chips, he clearly didn’t need to at the MED & HIGH stakes games bc he was grinding HARD and consistently winning.

A player called chezecow… unfortunately I cant remember the exact spelling of their name.

This player got to 1B extremely quickly. Their BRM strategy was super aggressive and volatile so its not really fair to compare.

Another player that won even more was a player called crabtastic. This player disappear after reaching prob over 10B and was consistently winning truck loads of chips! I could speculate as to why, but i think I’d get in trouble! lol

Please speculate on what you think happened to crabtastic. I played against them a reasonable amount - never had any suspicions that they were cheating based on their play. They did seem to always be playing, on multiple tables, and active in the chat though. I’m not sure hoe they managed all that - I guess if you don’t always have a beer in one hand it might be possible, but I’m not about to find out.

@swmore I don’t think you really need to grind at Replay, especially now that you’ve got to 1B. It’s not really a high standard deviation game in my experience, so you don’t need a huge bankroll to just drop into the elite stakes games whenever you have the chance.
