Being old

Getting old means waiting for the “Golden Years” and all the good times that supposedly come with it and then realizing that the Golden Years for me are taking a very long vacation. I am 66 and I am still waiting for their return.

And, getting old beats the alternative.

Being old means you have the opportunity & responsibility to help others, not only in Poker but in life as well. Being old is experience in life, both good and bad to share with all.

How many are receptive is the key. You usually hear “ I’m set in my own ways and don’t want to change “ and the young people could care less. It’s a shame when you know things that you would like to share that would benefit others in life but it falls on def ears.

Very true my friend, but I feel I must continue to try and help all with my experiences and shine the true Light and Truth as I believe and have learned over the years.

It is truly a beautiful gift from our Creator and share our experiences, in this life we have had.

I remember long ago being in a laundromat. It was busy and most of the machines were in use.

A young man hurried in and went through the crowd to find an open machine.

He then hurried out just as fast probably forgetting something

He then ran back in and asked mostly everyone in the store, including me, if anyone found his $5.

They all answered no and didn’t help him or even considered helping him.

There was one other customer left to ask and it was a disheveled old man.

He had his car parked out back and it was obvious he was living in his car.

His beard was long and when he talked he mumbled and one had to really stop and listen if you were going to understand him.

So, this young man in desperation, asked this old man if he found the $5 that he lost for his laundry.

The old man said, "You need $5? Here’s $5 "

Now, everyone in the laundromat learned a lesson that day. One that I haven’t forgotten.

This old man’s example was an epic moment.

We dismiss, in our judgement of people, not realizing we can learn from them just as easily as from others.

So, I agree that, "Being old means you have the opportunity & responsibility to help others, not only in Poker but in life as well. "

I would just add to that setting an example for lack of better wording.

This was a true story.

The old man talked to me that day and I couldn’t understand 3 out of 4 words.

He mentioned Marilyn Monroe I got that!

Someone left a half pack of cigarettes which I found and I gave it to him.

The cigarette he was smoking was so small… to the filter you know.

He had an old green duffle bag … maybe an old navy guy.

I don’t know.

If you remember the captain of the Titanic… he looked a lot like that.

That memory is about 40 years old now and I still remember it like it was yesterday.

It was an important lesson of generosity!

I like getting old. I compare myself to a fine aging bourbon :tumbler_glass:

Being old enough to know is not necessarily being wiser with age .

Being old to me, is being wiser with age. If not have we wasted our life?. If we are not wiser with age, we could not help others from our experiences, with their life in this world?

One may say, " To know ourselves more fully is our divine mission "

Some people have no common sense and don’t get wiser with age. Not someone I want to get life lessons from.

Agree to disagree at times.

“Those people” are the ones that bring about life lessons.

They bring the contrast into your life.

Without contrast no life lessons would ever be learned.

When one acquires wisdom with age, they realize to embrace all situations instead of dismissing them.

They see the value of the situation… even the beggar at the corner red light with a sign in his hand.

Let’s say the beggar did not have the common sense and found himself on the street corner.

He will test everyone that passes by their generosity and heart.

This example ties in nicely with helping others.

Just a passing thought to share like a cloud in the sky… lol

Not to be agreed or disagreed …

We will know ourselves more fully with the help of that beggar

Without “common sense “ one can have all the “ wisdom “ they think they have. Life lessons? I didn’t get to be where I am in life without them. You can’t fix “ stupid “ no matter how old someone is.

Being old and common sense.

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as:

  • Knowing when to come in out of the rain;
  • Why the early bird gets the worm;
  • Life isn’t always fair;
  • And maybe it was my fault.

Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don’t spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in charge).

His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a 6-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.

Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children.

It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer sun lotion or an aspirin to a student; but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.

Common Sense lost the will to live as the churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims.

Common Sense took a beating when you couldn’t defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault.

Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.

Common Sense was preceded in death,
-by his parents, Truth and Trust,
-by his wife, Discretion,
-by his daughter, Responsibility,
-and by his son, Reason.

He is survived by his 5 stepbrothers;

  • I Know My Rights
  • I Want It Now
  • Someone Else Is To Blame
  • I’m A Victim
  • Pay me for Doing Nothing

Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone.
