Gobble Til You Wobble Happy Thanksgiving GIF - GobbleTilYouWobble ...

I wanted to give thanks for being invited to play in such a top quality league with such a great group of players. There are so many cool things about this league. Having the “qualify” just to be invited, Having to earn your way to Gold, being able to win your way to the Tournament of Champions when you make the chips, and Getting a tournament named after you when you win one of these is the best trophies ever. The multiple leaderboards, the thrill of winning a crown, and being inducted into the Hee Haw Hall of Fame, the Donk of the Month Recognition and the 500 club. Just so many things about this league that set it apart. SO Thank you to all the members, to @chuckcox for recuiting so many of us, and mostly to @BlackWidow for everything you have done to make this league something special.

I just joined the League eight days ago. I’m really happy I did. Thanks -BlackWidow- and thanks to everybody else who participates and/or works to make it happen.

I was thrilled to win one of the All Donks In tournaments yesterday. I got really lucky at one point. I bluff-shoved, and my opponent called with a better hand, but I hit a pair during the runout and doubled up.

@ajwale was chip leader for a good while. I had to catch up when we matched up for the final heads-up. Here is a screenshot of me continuing to apply a bit of pressure.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

SSeville joins the 500 club

The 500 club consists of all Donks who have shown outstanding dedication to the league by playing in at least 500 league games.

It is my privilege to present to you @SSeville as the latest member of the 500 club. SSeville joined us in August 2018, just one month after the league was first formed. This makes him one of the most senior Donks who are still actively playing. SSeville is one of our most consistent members having played in 35 games in 2018, 98 games in 2019, 108 games in 2020, 77 games in 2021, 91 games in 2022, and 95 games to date in 2023.

First, thank you @nafffy for stepping up, nice to see a fellow Seattleite and Hawks fan on here!
After reading the results of the survey, I would like to put this up for debate.

I see this as a positive, am I reading this wrong?.
I see 88% or 59 payers saying neutral or yes and 6 or 7 players saying no, what say you?

If posting this here is inappropriate and this data was not intended for this forum, let me know and I will remove it.

The key is the number of players who would play more vs number that would play less + number that would stop playing. So although there 11.9% for player who would play more that is offset by 10.4% that would play less and 1.6% the would stop playing. 11.9 vs 12.0 is actually a net negative.

Yes I see a .1% and if that is the determining factor, and if you factor in only half voted it’s all the way up to .2% if we were dealing with a billion-dollar company that would matter, we are talking about a free poker site league, IMO I would guarantee the that .2% either would play anyway or be replaced by new players in a short time with the single league format. I was generalizing when I said positive to try to push a resolve.
My intentions here are not to hinder this league but to help, maybe my help is not needed, maybe I am poking my nose in where it shouldn’t be, it’s my nature to speak up. I have a great respect for this Donks league and play with many of the members in other leagues and at the regular tables.

I have heard many ideas, from my circle of players, but what resonates the most is; when was this league at its peak, what were they doing when retention and participation was at the highest for the longest amount of time, was it simpler, did people communicate more, what happen? Were so many ideas implemented that may have cause a separation from the gen pop?, How do you fix that. Without a fleet of admin to manage, recruit, write and promote, the direction I see is back to what worked.

I was here when this league was at it’s peak. My answer is simple…reduce the games each week. The incentive to play is lost on many, the league has become stale. Playing 2 games in the same day has proven NOT to increase participation. Gold league was at 70-75% participation…Silver, was pushing 60-65…now they struggle to field 20 a game. And to social aspect is long gone. Leadership over the last number of years has done well…they are just totally resistant to change. And surveys, as has been proven in the past, simply are a waste of time.

I was a charter member of the Donks. I soon became the chief recruiter of the Donks. Although I quit playing because the competition was too tough, I continued to be the chief recruiter…because I was a loyal lover of the Donks. For the past year it has become VERY difficult to recruit. If I friend ten who qualify…two accept. When I attempt to recruit those two…it is usually futile. I am not sure why this is. I think that Replay offers so many game options that few are interested in joining. BTW, very nice analysis above.

Also, it has been mentioned to me by an ex Donk that the games used to be “special” when we only played two games per week. These are things to be considered. I hope that the League can continue because there is a lot of history here. Best of luck DONKS.

After reading the above, I think I can add a little. At the risk of sounding self-serving and arrogant, I played in Donks when I thought the league was really good. (no, not because I was a member). I probably played about 100 games over 5 quarters, but saw and experienced enough to have opinions on what made it work really well.

As many noted, back then there were two games a week, Sunday night and Wednesday night, and members were expected to play 50% of the games. One game every 3-4 days made you really look forward to playing, and never want to skip a game. The attendance percentage was high in both tiers. You learned your opponents’ games because you saw them consistently. Rivalries developed. All fun. Eventually Donks added two more game a week. Now I understand afternoon games were added to supposedly lure non North Americans to play more often with better game times. I don’t know the make up of donks by continent. But I believe more games was less in this case. Missing a game – or a week – became no big deal. Also, with two games a day twice a week, if you do fairly well, was a commitment of 4 plus hours a day just to donks. If you have a job, a family, other hobbies, or a life, that’s a lot.

Secondly, the social aspect back then was off the charts. This is no knock on anyone who has or currently runs the league, they all have done and do their best. Badonkadonk, the founder, was unique. A terrific player on the tables, he was often commenting on the forum and watched the final table of EVERY GAME in silver and gold, congratulating players and sometimes teasing those he knew well. I remember seeing 12, 13, 14 people watching the final tables. Because they were that into it. THAT became contagious, and made people chattier, if not during the games, certainly in the forums. I don’t even know why there is a donks forum anymore; the posts are few and far between. Back then, it was a funny place. One example; when Badonk (and I believe PuggyWug) came up with the all donks in concept, the good natured trash talk between golds and silvers led to dozens and dozens of very funny posts. Challenges from one tier to the other. It engaged people. To the point where, when Team Donk was formed for a special challenge with TPP, there were posts every weekend, rooting folks on, even if you didn’t play in team poker or had never seen a game.

Bottom line, this is in response to the posts above of what made the ‘good ol days’ so ‘good’. Fewer games, but higher attendance. (the quarter I advanced to gold, I believe gold donks was often over 50 people a game, silver usually close to 40, both well over 50% of members from each tier in every game). Competitive games that made you want to play that next game to beat some of your twice weekly foes. Which, btw, I rarely did.
