I never argue with anyone who wants to call Phil Ivey the GOAT. He kind of checks all the boxes:
-high name recognition even outside of “poker nerd” circles
-huge cultural impact on the game
-has won at the highest level for years
-respected as both a cash and tournament player
-capable in multiple games/disciplines, not just NLHE
-consistent winner against both exploitative and GTO players
-aura for days
-not a scumbag
For comparison, Negreanu checks a lot of these boxes too, but as time passes I think it’s increasingly the case that a lot of top players would be happy to see Negreanu sit down next to them
Nobody is ever happy to see Phil Ivey at their table
Knowing about seemingly frivolous things can enrich life in unexpected ways:
Joy and Entertainment
Engaging with light-hearted topics or hobbies can provide joy and a mental break from daily stress. It keeps your mind refreshed and entertained.
Social Connections
Frivolous knowledge often serves as great conversation starters. Sharing trivia, fun facts, or common interests can help build connections with others.
Creativity Boost
Exploring various subjects, even those deemed frivolous, can spark creativity and inspire innovative thinking. You never know when a random fact might trigger a brilliant idea.
Mental Flexibility
Diversifying what you know keeps your brain agile. It encourages curiosity and open-mindedness, helping you think outside the box.
Life Enrichment
Small, seemingly insignificant details can add texture to your experiences, making life more vibrant and interesting.
So, indulging in a bit of frivolous knowledge can certainly make life more enjoyable and enriching!
Look, Ungar was a genius and light years ahead of his time. But it’s kind of like the Bill Russell argument IMO. Hard to say he’s “the best ever” when the game was just so so so far behind where it is today.
I always think Ivey is a good pick because he’s been so good in so many areas for so long.
