Teaching Poker to Others

So many things 2 say, better wait for it.

I teach people how to play poker by showing the different hands and then playing 5 card draw first with no chips, then with chips. They soon get the idea and then I teach them holdem.

With an astute pupil I could undo most of what is taught. At least a great deal of it. Bruce Lee. You can only “teach” mediocrity.

Five card draw. Gardena 1983. Everyone took turns dealing. After I escaped buying Doyle’s bible and teaching some Cajuns how to play holdem on the boat in the Gulf. I actually arrived in Vegas when there was still a five card stud game at the El Cortez. Five card draw. The basics. Everything else flows from that.

Only way to start when it comes to giving them an idea of the "randomness’ of card distribution. I taught dealing school for about six months in Vegas. Not about how to win but rather the role of the dealer etc. Still, they got some ‘freebies’ about the reasoning behind teacher explaining an imaginary hand. You have to do it a few times (with chips is better, I think) for them to get an idea of the difference between “Dog” and “Dawg”!

JUST PLAY! …or try to! …or mean to! I agree with the randomness comment(s). I once finished 7th in a tournament that I forgot to play. When RPP first introduced 7 Card Stud. I thought that I understood “that” game. Deeper waters than I thought! Also, the one and only time that I have held a Royal Flush.
