replay poker please listen to the members, they don’t want late registration anymore. there are a lot more people that don’t want it then there are people that do.
I remember the original thread suggestion late registration. I think 2-3 people actually wanted it and there was a lot more saying no and went ahead and implemented.
get back to listening to the majority of the people instead of the minority
I don’t see the drawback of late registration. It increases the price pool, so it’s positive for the people who registered earlier and for the people who forgot to register and have 10 minutes or so to still enter the tourney.
Those crying about late registration do not represent the majority, even though they might cry the loudest.
If you think registering late is some sort of advantage, you’re wrong. It’s a disadvantage. If you really think it’s an advantage, then you should register late.
There, problem solved without the need to change anything.
An MTT attracts 90 players and the starting stack is 2500 chips, which is also the average stack per player. This means there are 225,000 chips in the game. After 10 minutes there are only 80 players. The new average stack is 2813 chips.
The disadvantage in this case when you buy in at the ten minute mark is you have over 300 less chips.
Hello,
This issue is a huge bee in my bonnet. I do not like the late registration, because, of where the computer slots the late players. I jotted this example down, hoping that this situation would come, up. I entered a tourney that when the start time, started, were 38 people. By the time the late registration time was over, there were 83. What my beef, is where these late players are slotted in. If the chips given are 2500, then they are slotted in at the 2500 point, which was 17 to 25 at that point. This is truly unfair, for the players that were on time. .True, some player, have lost hands, but why should they be penalized even more, just because, these people use the system to be slotted in a higher position, right off the get go !!! That way, the late comers, on purpose, I really believe, 99% have the advantage to climb the leader board from a higher spot to begin with for them. they are playing late for exactly that reason. To be higher up on that tournaments leader board !!! Then they have a better chance to advance with winning from there. I also, understand Replay’s point, that with late registration, the tournament receive more players, which means more revenue. If there was no late registration. these players, would play in the tournament anyway !!!
Thank, You,
Wivyjan !!!
I don’t schedule my life around free poker. When I feel like playing poker, if there’s a tournament registering, late or not, I usually play it. If I register late, I am starting at a disadvantage.
Assuming people have busted out, I will be starting with less than the average stack. Starting from behind can hardly be an advantage.
Starting late also reduces the amount of information i have about the others at the table. I would be starting at a higher blind level without the benefit of watching the action to that point. Again, this is a disadvantage.
Those not liking late registration should consider playing multi table sit n goes. There’s no late registration there, so you should have less to complain about.
Yes a late player will start will less than the average stack.
But they will usually start with more than the median stack. I believe that is Wiyjan’s point.
And she/he has a point. Absolute value of a stack is less important than stack position on the leader board.
You win chip by position, not by stack value.
A late register may enter a game with 100 people and be ranked 37.
Yes he has less than the average stack but he has a chip advantage over 63% of the tourney.
At that point in time it is easier for the new arrival to reach the money than everyone below him, even though he has a below average stack.
Depending on how one approaches a tourney, that may be seen as an advantage, disadvantage or non-issue.
Another way of looking at the advantages of signing in late is that you start with the highest possible starting amount at 9:59 after the game starts. You twin brother sat out while he made a sandwich. It took him 9 minutes and 59 seconds. Neither of you played any hands but you have at least two blinds more chips.
It is always better to start as late into the game as you can.
I never win a tournament in the first 15 - 20 mins. When the late registration is done i can have 3 times the average stack (most of the time i start a tournament from the start), but that not gives me any guarantee i end up in the prize, in one hand i can ruin my chances:)
And at the end of the late registration i can have a low stack and still end up in the prizes.
Late registration happens live as well. There are many good points made here and its interesting to see people’s opinions about it. I will catch flak for this I’m sure but in general, better players want to see more hands. The early stages of tournaments are great opportunities to pick up chips from weaker/looser players but they are also a time of danger because the variance in the play is far higher.
So I guess it depends on your playing style and strengths. In the end, I’m not sure it matters one way or the other in deeper tournaments. I don’t have any research on the impact in the shorter games and would love to see any if someone has it. If I was going to split the baby on this topic, I’d say late registration is fine for the deeper tournaments but get rid of it for the Bankroll Builder things and similarly short tournaments and absolutely get rid of it for freerolls and satellites.
