We have some exciting things coming up late this week, but first, it’s time for a little contest! Share your thoughts for a chance to win! This month, we have a fantastic question submitted by @Maya. Check out the question below and let us know who you prefer playing poker against …

Tell us a little bit about why you chose A, B, C, or D – or something else entirely! I’ll be choosing five random players to receive 100,000 chips on Wednesday, October 17th.
[/quote]

I Would say D is my preference of play. I Like t mix it up at the tables. A few friends, newbies and familiar gamers keeps it interesting.Part of the fun for me is meeting new folks and seeing other styles of play to sharpen my play.

I prefer friends because we share common interests and we can chat about them when we muck our cards. Additionally, if I lose my chips I would prefer it to be friends.

Answer D. All players are welcome. Why limit yourself to just playing with friends? That never happens on-line anyways…Of coarse it’s nice to play against your girlfriend (ha ha) or boyfriend (hmm). They might not be so friendly if you knock em out of the game, or beat em up real bad. I believe that a person is more apt to become a better player if they play against strangers, and try their best to beat them at the game. If you don’t play to win, you are missing all the fun. Don’t be afraid of being the only stranger at the table. Willingly accept the challenge, and you will make new friends, and have more fun in the process…Good Luck!

I prefer strangers, because about a year ago I decided to quit playing so seriously. Now I mainly play to aggravate others. I would hate to do it to someone who knows me.

At the tourneys I usually attend one doesn’t have a choice, so I take what comes, friends, strangers, semi-strangers, enemies, silent or talkative, aggressive or soft players etc., and I try to make the best out of it.

When I meet one or more friends at my table, I know I won’t focus on winning, but I’ll rather enjoy the social aspect of the game and the fun. Obviously it’s not a good feeling to knock a friend out of a tourney - when it happens, I always imagine them to think something like “Et tu, Brute” - but thank goodness there are no resentful people among my friends. I don’t resent it either when they do the same to me, except maybe swearing Vendetta, Vendetta!

On the other side, I undoubtedly play my best poker against strangers.

So the big question: what do I prefer? I wish I could answer, friends on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, strangers all the other days, but if it must be one choice, I pick A. Who cares about winning!

Who do I like playing against?

1985 in a basement of a friend’s parent’s house. We were about sixteen and not nearly as good of players as we thought we were. Chips weren’t used as we each had our own coffee can filled with loose change. Typically it was nickel ante and max raise of a quarter. The game was “dealer’s choice”. More specifically it would be hands of: “Spit in the Ocean”, “Rainy Day Baseball”, or “Jacks or better (to open) with trips to win”. Anything under the sun could be called wild, and sometimes was. Our “poker table” was an unused pool table. The chairs were all the wrong height and it didn’t matter. Refreshments were provided by a mother who was way too underappreciated at the time. Play would commence after sundown and continue often past the following sunrise. It didn’t matter because we were young and without any real responsibility at the time.

Now, some of those dear friends are gone. Some have moved across the country. And as bad of players as we were back then, what I wouldn’t give for another all-nighter with the “old gang”. So my answer is a resounding “A”.

I like to play with friends that I’ve met on here. Anyone who has played with me knows I like to joke and bs while I play. Strangers a lot of times will keep quiet and not join in the conversations or even say ty when you respond with a nh to a good win they had. With friends you can be a smart ass and hoot on them when they mess up, praise them when they do good, and everyone laughs with you, especially when it’s YOU that messes up. For me playing with friends and joking around just makes the game more fun.

I like to think everyone is my friend. When I rip out someone’s liver and eat it, I try to do it in the friendliest way possible. If I could, I would offer to share it with some fava beans and a nice chianti. Sharing is caring!

Edited to add: I mean this figuratively, not literally. I don’t even like liver.

By the way, “B” is kind of goofy. How are they strangers if you have met them?

if it really was picking only 1 i would have gone for A.

but since there is also the option of a combination, i defenitely gonna pick D
they all have their own fun parts, so i do like them all.

Hi Bahia can I copy and paste what you have written? You’ve hit the nail on the head my fried! KR Alan

There really should be option E. for Ex…
I suspect we all have that player we thought was ok so we accepted the friend request. A few days later we see them again and ex was all nice and chatty until you felted them. Hey, it was their 3rd time in a row shoving on your BB so you call and eliminate them.
Next time you meet all you get is snarky comments and constant attack. You try to ignore it and be friendly to no avail, so you wait for a monster and boot the fool again. 10 minutes later you realise they have unfriended you for outplaying them…
Well, you guys & gals might not have that exact ex…
… BUT .about once a month I have been suspected of visiting table ex just to felt them again.

Edit…
I just realised I didn’t actually choose a qualifying answer so…
Mostly D with a regular dose of B

I pick C
As I don’t know how strangers will play and can learn from them something new ideas and also it is challenging.A and B most of the times we play with them and know way they play so no challenge. When we play we have no option to select with whom we want to play but have to play with whosoever is at the table.Option D is always there as it is automatic and no challenge.I will enjoy playing with strangers whom never played.Hence my pick is C

I’ve always preferred playing MTTs. Whatever was starting soonest with a fee I could afford was usually where I went. I read the rules for Omaha, entered a MTT and got crushed rather abruptly. I’d call with an unbeatable hand then miss the next two deals figuring out how the heck I got beat! So I’d avoid those games for a while but as time went by I became more and more comfortable with the game. I think it was about a year ago that I began to develop a preference for Omaha Hi-Lo MTTs over all other games. About 3 or 4 months ago, while waiting for a tournament to start, I went perusing around the website for a bit and was surprised to find my name on the Monthly Leaderboard for Omaha Hi-Lo MTTs! I was on the list of top 100 players-in 97th place. Only the top 50 receive prize money (free chips) but I was excited to be on the list. Short-lived, by month’s end I fell to 107th or something, which was visible only to me. The following month I was determined to remain in the top 100. I think I finished at 99th-on the list! Last month, for the first time, I made the top 50 and actually earned some free chips!

The reason I’m relating all this is not to boast about my superior skills at Omaha Hi-Lo. Believe me, I have a long way to go before I could even dream of garnering the half-a-million chips awarded to the 1st place finisher each month.

The cool thing about the leaderboard, and striving to climb it, is that you see a lot of familiar names. Names of the folks you’re playing against every day! It changes your entire perspective when you realize that the player who’s become irritating, (because he/she has been catching these lucky streaks and knocking you out every time you get to the final table), has finished among the top 5 players for the last 7 or 8 consecutive months! There’s 3 or 4 pretty dominating players who I’ve come to pay a lot more respect to when I find myself playing against them.

I’m not about to say that “I prefer” to play against these players. That would be like saying “I prefer to get my butt kicked.” Actually, they’re just another player at the table as long as you’re not forced to play head-to-head. Regardless, it doesn’t hurt to pay close attention to the things they do if you don’t already know everything there is to know about playing the game. 2 weeks ago, I realized I’d just advanced my game by a couple of notches after my observations helped me figure out a little piece of the puzzle that had never dawned on me before. “Wow!” I thought to myself, “There’s still some significant (material) aspects of this game that I wasn’t aware of!” Then I knew, these players are, indeed, better at this game than I am.

I want to share something very cool that I noticed about these players: The 2 players who I personally regard as the best, (this includes only the players I am familiar with and is based solely upon 1 specific MTT Monthly Leaderboard over a relatively short time span-a little less than a year); these 2 players don’t rely on the often seen tactics that I absolutely despise the most. (Specifically, the tactics I refer to are recklessly going all-in at the onset of a tournament for the sole purpose of gaining an immediate chip advantage in order to make disproportionately large raises on almost every hand forcing all other players at the table to risk elimination should they call. a.k.a. bullying.) It’s a weak, shameless, unsophisticated strategy that has no place in free stakes poker. These 2 players don’t rely on doing this. Yet, they consistently win. Additionally, they are both polite when they lose, gracious when complimented, and affable always. (I should point out that they are older, more mature, and more experienced than the average player. Go figure.)

The notorious bullies, on the other hand, typically ignore compliments (nh, etc.) yet generously issue derogatory jabs upon eliminating any player with the audacity to utter a single word of objection to their iniquitous tactics. (Man, I wish I could mention names! Take it from one who knows. Providing names under these circumstances is a definite NO-NO here on Replay. This is why yours truly no longer has access to the “About Me” area on his profile page. Colorful descriptions, that include 4-letter words, apparently don’t fly either!)

Next fun fact: guess where the bullies can never seem to maintain a foothold on the leaderboard? (Hee-hee-hee) That would be the “top-10 area”. They make brief visits but that area seems to be reserved for winners, not loo…I mean “not bullies”.

Right now, at the beginning of the month, the leaderboard is a big ever-changing mess. You’re ranked by your top 20 scores so until everybody has time to play in 20 or 30 MTTs, it’s not indicative of reality. You might see wannabees like me appearing in, or near, the top 10! I think I was 14th the last time I checked. I don’t plan on getting comfortable. I’ll soon be dropping down as the cream rises to the top. But once most players have 20 scores posted you’ll see a lot of the same names seen on the final standings from recent months. It makes the tournaments more fun and adds more reward than just the chips you get when you finish in the money for a particular tournament.

In conclusion, I prefer playing opponents that appear on the Omaha Hi-Lo Monthly MTT Leaderboard. There’s not a doubt in my mind that almost everyone who’s name appears on that board is aware of their standing and playing with the intent of moving closer to the top. It’s interesting that I’ve never once seen chat from anyone that makes any mention whatsoever of that leaderboard during the course of a tournament!

Is there a contest for the longest post?

It was a difficult decision until I saw D

Well they’re not exactly friends either.

There was a couple I used to see waiting for the bus every day on my way to work. They still qualify as strangers even though I’ve met them quite a few times
