Three old men walk into a hotel and ask for a room. The counter guy tells them it will be $30, so they each give him a $10 bill. He gives them their key, and off they go.
They happen to pass the manager in the hall, and the manager then asks the counter guy if he remembered to give them the senior discount. He says no, so the manager pulls $5 of of the register and tells the counter guy to take it up to the old men.
The counter guy is a little dishonest, so he gives each man $1, and keeps the other $2 for himself.
The old guys were pleased that the room now cost them only $9 each.
3 times $9 is $27. Adding the $2 that the counter guy kept brings the total to $29.
Why would you add the two dollars the counter guy kept? That’s not what’s supposed to add up to 30. To get 30 add the 3 dollars they got back, not the 2 they actually ended up paying! You can SUBTRACT those 2 to get the 25 they were supposed to pay if you like, but adding them makes no sense.

What happened to the other dollar?
[/quote]you paid it to me for reading this…
3 times $9 = $27…subtracting( not adding ) the $2 the counter guy kept, brings the total to $25, the same amount in the cash register.
