Damascus, on the other hand, was renowned for his stamina and consistency. He won the Preakness and Belmont Stakes in 1967 and was named Horse of the Year that same year2. Damascus often excelled in longer races and had a remarkable ability to close strongly.
Their most famous race together was the 1967 Woodward Stakes, where Damascus, with the help of a “rabbit” (a horse set to ensure a fast pace), defeated Dr. Fager and Buckpasser in a stunning performance3.
